Addameer: Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association created a petition to pressure the United Nations to end its contracted with G4S, an international security company.
G4S is the largest international security company in the world. It operates in 125 countries.
The UN maintains multiple contracts with G4S for security services in Kenya, Cyprus, Serbia, the Dominican Republic, Morocco and Jordan. These contracts amount to over 22 million dollars a year.
However, in addition to serving the UN, G4S provides and maintains security systems at five Israeli prisons – one of which is even in an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank.
Such services include cameras, control room technology and other equipment.
Addameer argues that because Israeli prisons hold no regard for international law or prisoners’ rights, these UN contracts with G4S are in blatant violation of the UN’s own Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights.
Israeli prisons harbor over 6,000 Palestinian political prisoners. Moreover, adult and underage prisoners alike constantly report being subject to abuse, mistreatment, torture and denied due process in Israeli prisons.
In addition to serving prisons, G4S also provides equipment and services to Israeli checkpoints, private businesses in illegal Israeli settlements, and Israeli government facilities in the occupied West Bank.
Tell UN general secretary Ban Ki Moon to end all contracts with G4S by signing Addameer’s petition today.
